Treatment for Failed Back Surgery Syndrome and Failed Neck Surgery Syndrome

Atlantic Spinal Care provides comprehensive care for individuals suffering from failed neck surgery or failed back surgery syndrome. Twenty to forty percent of open spine surgeries fail to relieve patient’s pain and may cause more pain in the neck and arms or back and legs, depending on where the surgery is performed in the neck or the back. The causes of failure for open spinal surgeries are many, including, but not limiting to, formation of surgical scars, new problems in the adjacent spinal segment, hardware failures, and none fusion status.

Although we are leaders in endoscopic spine surgery, we also provide other options of treatment depending on each individual's unique condition. It is our belief that treatment begins with proper diagnosis and by understanding each of our patient's needs and the journey they have been through.

ASC believes that currently 5 steps are available on the path of treatment for spinal pain. Depending on the severity of the individual’s condition, one individual may start off at a different step then another. Here are the different steps:

The 5 Steps of Treatment for Back and Neck Pain
Step 16 to 8 weeks of conservative treatments including physical therapy & exercises, chiropractic adjustments, anti-inflammatory medications, acupuncture.
Step 21 to 3 spinal steroid injections.
Step 3Endoscopic Spinal Surgery
Step 4Open spinal surgery (microdisectomy, laminectomy, spinal fusions, total disc replacement)
Step 5Endoscopic spinal surgery, spinal cord stimulator, spinal narcotic pumps

Back spine surgery is commonly used for the treatment of lower back pain. Surgical operations are typically performed for spinal decompression and spinal fusions using cages, bone graft, bars, and screws. If a patient continues to have symptoms of back and leg pain after a surgical operation, the patient’s condition is called failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS).
Failed neck surgery syndrome means a patient continues to feel neck pain and or arm pain following a traditional open neck surgery.
